The Body Systems Map

The body is easier to understand when you can see the main systems on a simple map. Each system has a main job, but no system works alone. The heart, lungs, brain, kidneys, hormones, digestive organs, immune system, skin, muscles and bones are constantly working together.
A body system is a group of organs that work together for a major function. Different textbooks group some systems differently. For this simple map, closely connected structures are sometimes placed together, such as muscles and bones, or the immune and lymphatic systems. Learning the main systems gives you a mental map for understanding health, disease, medicines and tests later. The circulatory system moves blood around the body. It includes the heart, blood and blood vessels. Blood carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, immune cells and waste products. The respiratory system handles breathing and gas exchange. It brings oxygen into the body and helps remove carbon dioxide. It includes the airways and lungs. The nervous system is the body’s fast communication network. It includes the brain, spinal cord and nerves. It helps control movement, sensation, thinking, memory, automatic body functions and responses to the environment. The digestive system breaks food down, absorbs nutrients and passes undigested material out of the body. It includes the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The urinary system, especially the kidneys, helps control fluid balance, salt balance, blood pressure and waste removal. The endocrine system uses hormones as chemical messages. Hormones help regulate growth, metabolism, stress responses, reproduction, blood sugar, periods, puberty and many other processes. The musculoskeletal system includes muscles, bones, joints, tendons and ligaments. It supports posture, movement, protection and strength. The immune and lymphatic systems help protect against infection and other threats. The lymphatic network also collects excess fluid from tissues and returns it towards the bloodstream. These functions involve immune cells, lymph vessels, lymph nodes and organs such as the spleen and thymus. The integumentary system mainly consists of the skin, together with structures such as hair and nails. It forms a protective barrier, helps control temperature and contains sensory receptors. The reproductive system is involved in fertility, pregnancy, hormones and sexual development. It also interacts with emotional, social and wider health factors. The key point is not just memorising a list. The key point is connection. The lungs bring oxygen in. The blood carries it. The heart pumps it. The brain and nerves help regulate breathing and heart rate. The kidneys help control fluid and pressure. Hormones influence energy use. The body is a network. No system works alone.

- Body system
- A group of organs that work together to carry out one major job for the body.
- Circulatory system
- The heart, blood and blood vessels, which together move blood around the body carrying oxygen, nutrients, hormones and waste.
- Hormones
- Chemical messages released into the blood that help regulate processes such as growth, energy use and blood sugar.
- Gas exchange
- The swapping of oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out of it, which happens in the lungs.
- Endocrine system
- The glands, organs and cells that release hormones, often coordinating slower or longer-lasting changes across the body.
- Musculoskeletal system
- The muscles, bones, joints, tendons and ligaments, which together support posture, movement, protection and strength.
