Anatomy vs Physiology: What and How

Anatomy describes the body's structures and how they are arranged. Physiology explains how those structures work. The two are distinct ideas, but understanding the body usually requires both.

Anatomy and physiology describe two different questions about the same body. Anatomy is the study of structure. It describes what body parts are, where they are, how they are shaped and how they relate to nearby structures. Anatomy can be studied at different scales, from whole organs to tissues and cells. For example, anatomy tells you that the heart has four chambers and valves, where the lungs sit in the chest, how bones meet at a joint and how nerves travel through the body. Physiology is the study of function. It explains what body parts do, how they do it, how they respond to change and how they work with other parts of the body. For example, physiology explains how the heart generates pressure to move blood, how gas exchange occurs between the alveoli and blood, how the kidneys regulate water and salts, and how nerves transmit signals. A useful distinction is simple: anatomy describes structure and arrangement. Physiology describes function and mechanism. Structure and function are closely linked The two fields are separate ideas, but they continually inform each other. In the lungs, millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli provide a very large surface area and a thin barrier for gas exchange between air and blood. In the small intestine, circular folds, villi and microscopic surface projections called microvilli greatly increase the area available for absorption. In the heart, muscular ventricular walls generate the pressure needed to move blood. These examples show why anatomy and physiology are usually learned together. Structure helps explain what a body part can do, while function helps explain why particular structural features matter. The relationship is close, but structure alone does not tell you everything about function. When normal function changes Physiology describes normal body function. Pathophysiology describes the functional changes associated with disease or injury. For example, knowing the normal anatomy of a heart valve tells you where it sits and how it is arranged. Knowing its physiology explains how opening and closing helps direct blood flow. Pathophysiology asks what changes when the valve becomes narrowed or does not close properly. You do not need to memorise every anatomical detail or every physiological mechanism. The useful foundation is knowing which question you are asking: what is the structure, and how does it function?

Anatomy
The study of body structure, including what parts are present, where they are and how they are arranged.
Physiology
The study of body function, including how cells, tissues, organs and systems work and respond to change.
Alveolus
One of the many tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide move between air and nearby blood.
Gas exchange
The movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide between air in the alveoli and blood in nearby capillaries.
Surface area
The total area of a surface. A larger surface can support more exchange or absorption when the other conditions are suitable.
Villi
Small finger-like projections from the lining of the small intestine that increase the surface area available for absorption.
Pathophysiology
The functional changes that occur with disease or injury.
