Anatomy vs Physiology: What and How

Two words appear again and again in medical learning: anatomy and physiology. Anatomy is about what body parts are and where they are. Physiology is about how those parts work. Medicine needs both.
Anatomy and physiology are two foundation ideas that help organise medical knowledge. Anatomy is the study of body structure. It asks questions such as: What is this body part called? Where is it? What is it connected to? What does it look like? How is it arranged? For example, anatomy helps you understand that the heart has chambers, valves and blood vessels. It helps you understand where the lungs sit, where the kidneys are, how bones form joints, and how nerves travel through the body. Physiology is the study of body function. It asks questions such as: What does this body part do? How does it work? How does it respond to change? How does it interact with other body systems? For example, physiology helps you understand how the heart pumps blood and how lungs exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. It also explains how kidneys filter blood and control fluid balance, and how nerves send signals. A simple way to remember the difference is this: anatomy is the what and where. Physiology is the how and why. But the two are closely connected. Structure affects function. A body part’s shape, position and design often help it do its job. The lungs have many tiny air spaces to increase the area available for gas exchange. The heart has muscular walls because it needs to pump. The small intestine has folds and projections that increase the surface area for absorption. Function also helps explain why structure matters. If you know what a part does, its design often makes more sense. Physiology describes how the body normally works. When disease or injury changes that normal function, doctors may describe the change as pathophysiology. This is why medical learning often moves between anatomy and physiology. When learning about the heart, you need to know its parts and how blood flows through it. When learning about the lungs, you need to know their structure and how breathing works. When learning about the kidneys, you need to know where they are, how they filter blood, how they remove waste products and how they regulate fluid balance. For lay learners, you do not need to memorise every tiny anatomical detail. The aim is to understand enough structure and function to make health information less mysterious.
Anatomy explains body structure. Physiology explains body function. Good medical understanding needs both.

- Gas exchange
- The swapping of oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out of it, which happens in the lungs.
- Surface area
- The total amount of surface available for something to happen on. Folds and tiny projections increase it, which is how the lungs and small intestine fit so much exchange into a small space.
- Pathophysiology
- How normal body function changes because of disease or injury.
