You’ve Built the Foundation

The foundation lessons build one thing above all: a clear mental map of how the human body is organised. You are not expected to know everything about medicine. This closing lesson draws that map together, from cells to the whole person.

The human body can be studied through levels of organisation that increase in complexity. Cells and the material around them are organised into tissues. Several tissue types combine within organs. Organs and other structures work together in body systems, and those systems interact within the whole organism. The circulatory, respiratory, nervous, digestive, urinary, endocrine, musculoskeletal, immune and lymphatic, integumentary and reproductive systems are not separate machines. They exchange information, materials and effects continuously. Homeostasis is the body's continuous regulation of internal conditions within working ranges. Temperature, fluid, salts, oxygen, carbon dioxide and blood glucose are among the variables being regulated. These responses may restore balance, compensate for strain or sometimes be exceeded. Anatomy describes body structure and where structures are located. Physiology describes how those structures normally work. Pathophysiology describes how disease or injury changes normal function. Many medical terms contain prefixes, roots and suffixes that provide clues to their meaning. The whole sentence and clinical context determine whether a condition was found, suspected, ruled out, recorded in the past or mentioned as a possibility. These foundations can help you follow why one system affects another, why a medicine may affect several organs and why clinicians combine symptoms, measurements and context. They support understanding but do not establish an individual diagnosis. Later lessons explore individual body systems in greater detail while keeping the same aim: medicine explained clearly, safely and without unnecessary jargon.

Homeostasis
The body's continuous regulation of internal conditions within working ranges. Regulatory responses may restore balance, compensate for strain or be exceeded.
Anatomy
The study of body structure, including what parts are and how they relate to one another.
Physiology
The study of how cells, tissues, organs and systems normally function.
Pathophysiology
How normal body function changes because of disease or injury.
Tissue
An organised group of cells and surrounding material that performs related functions. Some tissues contain more than one cell type.
Health literacy
The ability to access, understand, appraise and use health information and services.
