The Autonomic Nervous System: Automatic Control

Your heart rate rises before you consciously decide to run. Your pupils widen in a dark room without any thought at all. A separate part of the nervous system handles this constant background adjustment, and it works in two opposing directions.
Alongside the nerve pathways you consciously control, a separate network runs continuously in the background. It adjusts your heart rate, digestion, pupil size, and many other functions, without any input from you. This is the autonomic nervous system, and it works using two opposing branches. The sympathetic branch: prepare for action The sympathetic branch is often summarised as the fight or flight system. When it activates, several things happen at once. It increases heart rate and blood pressure. It redirects blood flow toward muscles and away from digestion. It widens the airways to allow faster breathing, and dilates the pupils to let in more light. This branch activates in response to a perceived threat, sudden stress, or intense physical effort, preparing the body to respond quickly. The parasympathetic branch: rest and digest The parasympathetic branch works largely in the opposite direction. It is often summarised as the rest and digest system. It slows heart rate, promotes digestion by increasing activity in the gut, and narrows the pupils. This branch is generally more active during calm, restful states, allowing the body to focus resources on digestion, repair, and recovery rather than immediate action. A constant balance, not a simple switch These two branches are not simply switched on and off one at a time. Both are active continuously, and your body's state at any moment reflects the balance between them, shifting one way or the other depending on circumstances. A racing heart before a big exam reflects the sympathetic branch gaining the upper hand. A settled feeling after a large, calm meal reflects the parasympathetic branch dominating instead. Why this system runs without conscious control Unlike the voluntary nerve activity covered in an earlier lesson, the autonomic nervous system is not directly under conscious control. You cannot simply decide to lower your heart rate the way you decide to lift your arm. This is a deliberate feature, not a limitation, since functions this essential and this constant are generally better managed automatically than left to conscious attention. What a doctor checks A doctor cannot see the autonomic nervous system directly, but its effects are visible in several routine checks. Heart rate and blood pressure. These reflect, in part, the current balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches, and unusual patterns can point toward a problem with this balancing system itself. Pupil response. Shining a light into the eye and watching the pupil narrow tests part of the parasympathetic pathway directly. An abnormal response can point toward a problem along that specific pathway. Symptoms suggesting an imbalance. A doctor asks about symptoms such as excessive sweating, dizziness on standing, or digestive changes. These can reflect the autonomic nervous system functioning abnormally, sometimes as part of a condition affecting nerves more broadly. When this system is affected Certain long term conditions, including longstanding diabetes, can damage the nerves of the autonomic nervous system over time. This can produce symptoms such as dizziness on standing, digestive changes, or an unusually fast resting heart rate. This is explored further in the lesson "Dizziness and Vertigo".
